Many researches claim that people with pets have a higher quality of life. It has also been proven that caring for a pet can help very sick people feel less helpless.

For the best chance of keeping a pet in good health, while they do their voodoo magic on our health, use the following guidelines.

Grooming

If your pet is of long-hair type, remember to comb it daily to prevent matting. Don't forget to clean your pet's eyes, ears, paws and anal for good hygiene and to prevent infection. Also, it's a good habit to wipe their mouths after each meal with a clean cloth. Give them something to chew and help keep their teeth clean.

Protecting

Vaccinate your pets annually to develop adequate immunity and prevent diseases. You can look on your local BBB site to get a list of licensed Veterinary Centers and their rating.

Keep away items like string and rubber bands as they are easy to swallow and can cause intestinal blockages or strangulation. Also, place poisonous household plants like azalea, geraniums, etc away from your pet as it may swallow them.

If you are moving and cannot find a suitable candidate to take care of your pet, then you could secure your pet in a room to minimize its stress.

Diet

No matter how much they beg, never feed human food to your pet. It usually contain high amount of additives, oil and preservatives which would cause skin allergy and hair loss. Also, leftovers like chicken or fish bones may cause your pet to choke on it. Buy some pet snacks for between meals and try feeding them when you eat meals if possible

Always ensure there is ample supply of clean drinking water for your pet. if your pet does not drink enough to empty their water bowl every few days, change the water as well.

Seek advice from vets or a reputable pet shop for suitable type of animal food that is good for their health and oral hygiene.

Exercise

Regular exercise is important for the well-being your pets (and you too). You could bring your pet to places like parks and gardens where they could enjoy fresh air and have space for fun activities. Be responsible to other public park users, don't forget to pick up your dog's poop.

If weather does not permit outdoor activities, you can buy some pet-safe toys like balls to play with your pet in the house.

Think of your pets as you children and treat them as such (or maybe even better)
